Daredevil has faced many a costumed thug in his day, but one of his most dramatically clad antagonists is the original Gladiator (Real Name: Melvin Potter), who first entered The Man Without Fear's urban gladitorial arena in Daredevil Vol. 1 #18 (July 1966). Potter, who is a costumer by trade, initially had a very jealous attitude toward superheroes, feeling that they possessed their powers and abilities - and therefore their renown - due to their costumes. Seeking to make a name for himself via his own powered-up uniform, Potter created a stylized armored get-up complete with wrist-mounted buzz saws, razor-edged boots, and an intimidating helmet.
